Portraiture Research

I am drawn to the emotional development of the artist as they grow, with or within their work. Art isn’t only a way of expression when it comes to creating something visually appealing. The materials help to show the viewer an intimate conversation between the artist and themselves. As we see the line and color used we can feel and see what they might have been thinking. How this particular piece could have shaped their day or month. This is why I think self expression and exploration is an essential component of visual art.

Visual Arts are fundamental in the way we live today. If you think about it, many people use art everyday in their lives and don’t consciously think about it. It could be as simple as the colors they see when choosing an outfit or the way they take a picture of their face when snapping a selfie to a friend. Color theory and the exploration of color is a constant part of our everyday lives. It’s even in the form of what we eat and why. The color of our food could be the reason why we eat or don’t eat. We use art in the production of goods and services. The clothing we wear, the shoes that are on our feet are a form of wearable art. Our shoes could be considered sculptures. When using recycled materials in our process we also see previous creations of art and clothing being used to create a new idea or identity of artworks.

For me personally I think Art History has helped to shape us into the way we look at the world today. We use the past examples of an artist’s point of view to look at the past and understand the way that they lived. It starts from the beginning of history all the way to the contemporary world today. You can see through the art how the world might have been and has evolved since then. We wouldn’t grow and evolve without the examples and knowledge from the past artists. This is why I think Art History and Art Education go hand in hand. Just as we study past philosophers and mathematicians. Artists and Art Historians are integral to our lives and culture.
